Rouse: Involvement

This post is about Rouse.

So if you’ve decided that you want to help out, this is what it comes down to.

Even if you can’t program and can’t work out a user interface, we need someone to think of all the things you’d want your browser to be able to do. We need someone to think of all the things that it’d be good if your browser did better than it does today. We need someone to think of what of those ideas are to be saved for later or reprocessed because of infeasible implementation. We need someone to consider what needs to happen when; which things are more important.

If you do program, we definitely need your help. Even if you don’t want to write code, figuring out a good way to architect the browser or the tabs could be a very important contribution because it could save a lot of time and help other people contribute smaller parts that have more effect. And if you do want to write code there’s no shortage of modules that could be written.

What it boils down to is this: the web browser space hasn’t seen much of what I call delight innovation. Not very many things have become available recently that’s made it a joy to use your web browser because some things are now possible. There’s been a lot of purely technical innovation with new standards, but not much around shaping a browser in such a way that you’d like to and can use it more. I have a few good ideas and the will and capacity to implement a lot of them myself. I can’t promise you fame or riches if you join in, but I can promise you influence, and it’d get done quicker.

From here to there, there are only two things standing in our way: ideas and the willingness to labor. Please join me, if you can, and I promise you that it’ll be worth it.

For more, please read up on the initial discussion list messages, and also subscribe and report your interest. There’s more detail on the list about actually committing code.

Comments

  1. Okay, I want to manufacture some delight. I know it’s still very early in the process, but how—I mean, logistically—should we get involved?

  2. Read up and talk on the discussion list, which also has more information on this topic.
