waffle

Waffle was a weblog that ran for nine years and five days from 2003 to 2012.
The last post has been written and comments will be closed by the end of March 2012.
The author of Waffle, some guy in Sweden, also occasionally writes stmts.net.

(If anything will ever succeed or revive Waffle, it will be announced in this location, and in the feeds.)

Monocle 1.5.3

Fixed Google search results again. Also includes a slight grooming of the default lineup. (+= YouTube; s/Windows Live/Bing/; and updated favicons and search URLs.)

Since the (instant) search results had been broken for a while before this update, the impression I’m leaving might be that I don’t care about Monocle and don’t put a lot of active thought into how the search process could be improved. In the not too distant future, and as time permits, I hope to prove that impression wrong.

Tumbling

NetNewsWire source list, showing three feeds in close proximity with the tumblr favicon

That Tumblr favicon is incredibly annoying, and not because it’s a bad favicon. I am not in the least interested in the mechanism through which these reads are published. I am interested in the feeds and its contents, and a favicon with a connection to the site adds charm and helps navigation. The service icon adds nothing; it’s just an intrusive advertisement.

And yes, this applies equally to, shudder, “Blogger” (whose icon is far more distractive) and WordPress.com, both of which have been doing this for years.

Cultural Dusk

Apparently, all public libraries in Philadelphia will be closing because of lack of funding. This is not just outrageous, this is a fucking travesty.

Part of a functioning democracy is the free and unfettered access to culture and information for all citizens. Though often neglected, it’s a fundamental building block of society. There may be other sources available in this day and age, but it stands to reason that it is thoroughly irresponsible to fail to budget for a public library where the limits and filters can be kept to a minimum, and a high level of access is maintained.

For those of you in a place to do something, anything about this, I implore you: throw the rascals out.
