- Zap your PRAM.
- Stop laughing, realize I’m serious and actually zap your PRAM.
- Wonder how much you paid for this computer again, and if using Time Machine really did transport you back to 1989 when “zap your PRAM” was not only a valid troubleshooting technique but actually often the answer.

I usually find that simply rebooting will work.
Are you sure the problem was solved by the PRAM zap and not the reboot itself?

Plug in a set of headphones an unplug them. Works for me.

You still hear ‘zap the PRAM’ these days (didn’t they change the acronym at some stage?). The difference a decade makes is that usually people will recommend to ‘repair permissions’ first in the 21st century.

Bergamot: Yes, because the volume was at 50% and it didn’t make the startup sound the first time, but it did the second time (after having reset the PRAM).
Cameron: That’s what a Google search told me too. Not everyone has headphones around all the time.
