Nokia 5800

They get it.

  1. With a stylus? Are you sure?

  2. Considering how I didn’t even notice by the UI that you had to use a stylus before I saw it in one of the last photos, yes, I think they’re well on their way. It’s hard to judge scale, but it doesn’t exactly look like a P1i-like “if you’re really really nice and cramp up, you might be able to get by with using your fingernail” approach.

  3. With 4 different methods of text input? Are you sure? :)

I just wonder why they are hedging their bets again, no one could decide? No method is good enough?

But sure that is a step in the right direction, do they really get it or have they just copied the fancy look is yet to be seen. Given choice between stylus and finger (and guitar pick) does not sound very promising. I’m also worried about the responsiveness of the UI.

I won’t judge after I’ve tried it myself.

  4. Saying Nokia “gets it” after seeing a few pictures is a bit of a stretch.

  5. With regard to the four text input methods, I sure wish you could turn a transatlantic liner that fast. Compared to the other knee-jerk “let’s align our business against this because this seems to be what people want, even though there’s clearly no superior way to making phones than the lasts-18-months-hides-dozens-of-commands-behind-menus-and-let’s-make-about-20-variants-of-each-one model, in fact, I don’t even know why we’re doing this and conceding some ground, but our marketing people said we should” responses, Nokia’s by far the best.

The original iPhone took two and a half years, start to finish. I don’t think it unreasonable that making a comparable phone calls for a new foundation technically and certainly unhinging yourself from the existing products and the current course psychologically, and it’s now been just 15 months since the original release. I think phones that are really on par with the iPhone to use will be a year out or more.

These things considered, yes, I stand by what I said. Nokia gets it. The way the phone looks right now compared to the other “killers” speaks volumes.

  6. But if they really got it, wouldn’t Nokia have waited, instead of pushing out a mediocre (according to reports from inside Nokia itself) phone? What does this phone prove? That Nokia is able to do a somewhat decent touchscreen phone that barely competes with its own products, other than OMG BIG ICONS?

  7. You are assuming that Nokia is being run by rational or decent people, or that whatever rational or decent people are there has any amount of leverage on how this should be executed.

I will repeat again what I’ve already said: Nokia gets it. I don’t mean all of Nokia, because if all of Nokia woke up one day and got it, they would be calling their customers and apologizing. But the product team necessarily gets it. This doesn’t mean that the product is in fact as good as it can be or should be, but it means that it’s significantly better than the other half-assed tries. They have many fewer things to fix before they undo the fundamental fuckups, but I believe that this work is being done even right now, and that Nokia’s simply under pressure to present something.

I would be the first to cartwheel if Nokia would again start focusing on making a range of a few good focused phones and allow some resources for every phone to potentially be the best of its kind. (I could actually remember their entire lineup around the time I got my 8210 a few years ago.) But I’m not necessarily holding my breath.
