The River of Posts

If I can’t click a link at the front page of your weblog to see older posts — not just the next older post, but older posts — and then continue going back and forth along the same lines, you’re doing it wrong. (Also, if this is referred to as “Next”, which implies “forward”, which implies “in time”, which implies “future”, and/or if the corresponding link to go to newer posts is named “Previous”, which implies “past”, you’re definitely doing it wrong.)

  1. This was a hot blog topic for a week back in 2007, I don’t remember all the folks who wrote about it other than one delicious bookmark I have:

Ditching ‘Next’ and ‘Previous’ for Blog Navigation.

Are you going to call out the example site in question? Maybe there’s something about the content which doesn’t make the nearby posts (by date) relevant?

  2. Mr Atwood’s. Of course, it’s a “product property” — which is what the car companies tell you about manufacturing irregularities like wheels falling off — of being a Movable Type site. But I didn’t mean to rag on MT, or “baked” pages, I meant to rag on poor design.

For those who are keeping track, this is also about usability. Not everything I write on usability is about “pretty things”.
