For fucks sake, Apple.
Get 64-bit support into iTunes and QuickTime, and into whatever drivers or supporting software is needed for iPods and the iPhone. 64-bit Windows is far from mainstream, yes, true. And it’s a major pain to get drivers to work because they’ll all need to be Microsoft certified, that’s correct. It’s also a bitch to support, since Windows just doesn’t do fat binaries. (I don’t count .NET binaries as fat binaries – they also just contain one type of instructions, it just happens to be IL.)
But you introduced iTunes as “probably the best Windows app ever written”, and The Steve said recently it’s like “giving a glass of ice water to somebody in hell”. Now that’s marketing, and no one with half a brain expects software to be perfect. But you, of all companies, could at least try – especially with users thinking it will “just work”.
Three more things about Apple on Windows:
Software Update is scheduled using the software scheduling in the Control Panel. Good on you – I haven’t seen anything even by Microsoft that uses that for scheduled tasks.
Keep the iPod service inactive until someone first plugs in an iPod. I know Microsoft keeps a lot of services running by default, but that’s no excuse.
Stop the upselling. Do not offer to install iTunes when I want to download (or upgrade via Software Update) QuickTime or Safari.
