I’ve had it up to here with accusations of an “Apple tax”, but when shopping for memory today, I just couldn’t fail to relay this bit of info:

Kingston Value RAM 2 x 1GB: $276
Samsung (mentioned as identical to Apple shipping modules) 2 x 1GB: $676
(Both PC2-5300 DDR2 SO-DIMM 667 MHz, 200-pin. Prices from varying Swedish web shops, translated to USD for her pleasure.)

So, the Apple RAM tax is precisely $400. And a big horse’s head outside 1 Infinite Loop for not shipping the MacBook in single-slot memory configurations. (I could have just bought an extra 1GB module, but since I have 2 x 512MB, I have to buy two modules and sell the others.) (Update: Hosey proposes that the horse’s head goes in the 1 Infinite Pool. I’ll keep that in mind.)
