beautiful los angeles…and the gates of hell

los angeles is looking fine and beautiful, of course! nice and sunny and not too warm. (not too cold either, unlike that sweden place!)

however, my math teacher believes that the gates of hell are opening up. today in statistics class, he recounted the evidence:

  • hurricanes in florida
  • related tornadoes
  • related mudslides
  • continuing war in iraq
  • a looming war with china*
  • new computer viruses
  • those two volcanoes that might erupt

*i’m not sure where he got that idea.

also, there was some earthquake action today in central california (nobody here felt it).

i’d think that my statistics teacher might have some idea about coincidences and cause-and-effect…but he seems pretty confident about the gates-of-hell thing. weeee’ll see.

Dear Shawn. Our swedish weather is terrible too. · 2004.09.28 14:47 (x)

A status report, September 2004, Philadelphia. Related notes from Tampa, Florida as well.

Dear Waffle,

The weather in Sweden looks to be rather pleasant. I cannot say the same for Florida though, where my family has just gone through their 4th hurricane of the season. A record you know?

An oak tree fell into the front of my parents house, I have not seen the pictures yet to determine how bad the damage is. Mom was in the room when the Tree collapsed further and came through the front window. She was most upset over this when it happened Sunday. In an odd set of coinky-dinks, Mom had sent a “I have a bad feeling about this” email on Saturday. I actually warned my Father to give my Mother lots of Rum or Wine before she went to bed that night. I hoped she would simply sleep through anything nasty. Waking up with a hangover is pretty bad and would take the sting off finding a tree in your living room.

The weather in Philadelphia on the other hand has been very mild. I sat out in Rittenhouse Park, with Julie, on Saturday and enjoyed a banana-strawberry soy smoothie. Rittenhouse is where most of center-city Philadelphians will come to hangout when the weather is nice. There’s often musicians, painters and people selling other forms of art. Apparently there also lots of parents who let their very young children run around without a whole lot of supervision. I did catch a few people getting a tan, but the amount of bathing suits will quickly dwindle now that Fall has arrived.

Speaking of Fall, I am dying to take a mini vacation to see the leaves change. I am also dying to see the last god damn disc of my Star Wars DVD box set, but haven’t been able to make time for it.

Best wishes from Philadelphia, please write back soon.

Shawn
